Der britische Superstar Robbie Williams hat am 22.November 2019 mit „The Christmas Present“ das erste Weihnachtsalbum seiner Karriere veröffentlicht. Der Longplayer ist als CD (Standard und Deluxe-Version) und Vinyl erschienen und enthält zwei Tonträger: „Christmas Past“ und „Christmas Future“. Beide enthalten eine brillante Mischung aus Eigenkompositionen und Coverversionen von Weihnachtssongs.

“The Christmas Present“ ist Robbies 13. Studioalbum und ein weiterer Meilenstein in der glanzvollen Karrriere eines der beliebtesten und erfolgreichsten Künstler Großbritanniens. Geschrieben und aufgenommen wurden die Songs in einer ganzen Reihe von Locations, u.a. in London, Stoke-on-Trent, Los Angeles und Vancouver. Einmal mehr arbeitete Williams mit seinem langjährigen Kollaborationspartner Guy Chambers zusammen, der den Großteil des Albums gemeinsam mit Richard Flack produzierte.

Robbie Williams ist einer der erfolgreichsten Musiker und Entertainer der Welt, sechs seiner Alben finden sich in den Top 100 der meistverkauften Alben in der britischen Musikgeschichte, weltweit stehen mehr als achtzig Millionen verkaufte Alben zu Buche, vierzehn Singles erreichten Platz eins der UK Charts. Mit achtzehn BRIT Awards ist er alleiniger Rekordhalter.

"The Christmas Present“ bildet den krönenden Abschluss eines weiteren, großen Jahres für Robbie. Die Musikikone begann sein 2019 in spektakulärem Stil mit der ersten ausverkauften Las Vegas-Residency, im Juli gab er eine ausverkaufte Headlinershow im Rahmen der "Barclaycard British Summer Time Hyde Park"-Konzertreihe. Zu Beginn des Jahres hatte er einen weiteren Teil seiner Fan-Serie mit dem Titel „Under the Radar Volume 3“ veräffentlicht und später im Rahmen des Projektes eine intime Show im Londoner Roundhouse gespielt.

Even so, no one else has played their part quite as he has. Looking back at all his triumphs along the way, it’s sometimes hard to remember how improbable many of them were. Just a few of the brief highlights: In 1990, when he joined Take That as a sixteen-year-old, it was an era when British boy bands were considered passé, and he was their youngest and least polished member. When he fell out with, and of, the band in 1995 at the height of their success, he was considered an entertainingly wayward loose cannon but few had serious expectations that he would come to much. When the following year he went round to the leaky flat of an unsuccessful and unfeted songwriter, Guy Chambers, and they tried to write songs that might ignite his fledging solo career, no one except perhaps them imagined that the song they wrote, “Angels”, would be the first in a career-defining generational soundtrack: “Let Me Entertain You”, “Millennium”, “No Regrets”, “Rock DJ”, “Supreme”, “Eternity”, “Feel” and many, many others. Or that he would also emerge as the most acclaimed and charismatic live performer of his times, a position that was cemented and celebrated by his record-breaking 2003 Knebworth performances over three nights in front of 375,000 people. And, even despite his other successes, there was widespread scepticism when in 2001 he announced plans to release an album of swing songs, Swing When You’re Winning, based around music he had heard and loved in his childhood it, and the accompanying filmed swing concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall, became two of his biggest successes, and opened up a new, part-time parallel career. Likewise when, in 2010, he decided to rejoin Take That for an album and a reunion tour, few could imagine that the resultant album, Progress, would become the fastest selling album in Britain of the century, or that the subsequent tour in which he performed alone and alongside his reconciled bandmates would be the biggest-selling British tour ever.

So it continues. As a solo artist, he has sold over 70 million albums, and has six of the top 100 best-selling albums in British history. He has had 14 number one singles, most recently 2012’s “Candy”. He is one of the most in-demand live attractions in music, and continues to play stadiums around the world. He has won 17 Brit awards, nearly double the total of any other artist.
After a ten-year break, in recent years he started to work again with Guy Chambers. The first fruits of that reunion appeared on Swings Both Ways in 2013, but it is on the new The Heavy Entertainment Show that they fully embrace the spirit of their previous collaborations, and allow it to expand and evolve. But these days Robbie Williams albums are also a broad church, and along the way there are also memorable collaborations with or contributions from Stuart Price, Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid, Rufus Wainwright, Brandon Flowers and Ed Sheeran. “With this album,” he explains, “I wanted huge choruses, universal lyrics, universal melodies. The experiment this time is trying to make the record as big as it can be.”

As for the title The Heavy Entertainment Show, it is a term he has been using for quite a while, another way of expressing that universality, and the playfulness, and a mindset where, in pop music, depth and shallowness need not contradict each other, or even be opposites: “I was musing over the phrase ‘light entertainment’ all the hugeTV shows from when I was a kid, 30 million people watching them, this huge shared experience of these moments called light entertainment. Sometimes it can be leveled at people in a bad way, but for me that’s heavy entertainment. That’s what I’m hoping to do with this album to have a shared experience with millions of people though the medium of light entertainment…but on steroids.”

“The heavy entertainment show,” explains Robbie Williams, “is every single moment on earth we’re all part of the heavy entertainment show.”
