Within the confines of an old farmhouse in Switzerland, Andrin Berchtold and Gian Reto Camenisch create warm, embracing electro pop as From Kid. Blending graceful harmonies with inviting synthesizers and shimmering guitars, the duo have made a beautiful pop debut that draws on “the contrast between an urban world and a rich nature”. The ideas for their songs often occur to them when they’re travelling, with the duo’s reactions to their surroundings, the natural world they explore and the people they meet clearly permeating their music.
The songs often inhabit vastly different moods and are sung in two voices: at times, they’re slightly melancholic with a feathery understatement, at other times sparklingly electronic and playful. Dark, gloom pop opener ‘Applause’ is filled with pulsing beats and atmospheric vocal reverb which meld seamlessly into the deliberate drum patterns and ethereal harmonies of ‘Need Of Our Skin’. New single ‘Come In’, meanwhile, demonstrates a different side to the duo with its uplifting stance on electro pop; from the melancholic to the joyous. What does remain constant is a message of encouragement: the band want their listeners to “Go run for gold!”. They view this as “the underlying topic of the songs. It sets the tone for the musical composition.” The album is indeed the assertion that ‘You Can Have All The Wonders, it is an album to inspire action and to lift the spirits.
After their previously released track ‘Colors’ charted on the Hype Machine, support for From Kid has only grown, opening doors that have led to them supporting John Newman at Club XTRA in Zurich, as well as playing shows at the Open Air St. Gallen, the Sound of the Forest Festival in Germany and the Les Trois Baudets in Paris. The debut album’s tracks will be performed live as the band takes on an extensive tour following the release of the LP.
The breathtaking video for ‘Colors’ showcases their live talents as the duo perform in a freezing room in Riom, France. The ‘Play Live #Bern Alstadt Sessions’ recording of the LP’s penultimate song ‘Underground’ only demonstrates their quality as a live band further, incorporating fellow musicians Gianluca Giger and Sascha Frischknecht to bolster their sound and recreate the rich, textured production found on the record.
From Kid’s debut album will haunt and charm in equal measure. It is the first full length offering from a band destined for great things in the new year, and the way these fantastic musicians are making waves in the music world, it will undoubtedly be the first of many.
